Interesting, 1.5 million dollars founding to create a safety training package....
I agree that emergency services personnel’s safety is paramount, however, I’m sure A- it doesn’t cost 1.5 million dollars to create a package, B- that sort of money could be spent better elsewhere.
As a former emergency service volunteer I have seen many near misses that could have easily been avoided as well as a few accidents caused by “rubber neckers”.
Emergency vehicles are set up with red and blue and amber flashing lights for a reason.... to warn people approaching an incident to drive with caution and emergency personnel could be on the road etc.The biggest issue with safety here is the placement of emergency vehicles.
Whilst we need to understand an ambulance needs to be close to the scene and patient, CFA/MFB need to be within 30mtrs, most incidents on roads require police for traffic control.
With all respect to VICPOL, if they positioned their cars in appropriate positions IE: before a bend on a road, before a crest in a road, far enough back to warn motorists, near misses would not occur. In the last 18 years I have been to countless MVA’s where police are required for traffic control and park their vehicles as close to the scene as they can to save walking up to take reports and what not.Like I said, I have a lot of respect for the members in VICPOL!!
You don’t need a 1.5 million dollar funded course to tell you common sense and logic......
Vehicle placement is the major factor for emergency services personnel. You can have that common sense and logic for free...
