WICEN Vic: WICEN Vic Digital Playground Thursday 7th October 2000hrs

To all WICEN Vic members,

Last week our at our Thursday digital playground session we got to use the latest version of TRAK from Paul VK3YYF. For those able to access a digi repeater we tested our systems using a RF pathway and several others Paul organised a VPN connection so they could participate virtually as digi’s are not accessible. Thanks Paul for all your effects with TRAK and last week’s session.

As the group continues its exploration of the various digital technologies and their application for Emcomm and Public Safety use next week we’ll be taking a look at the Emcomwin system. The Emcomwin system comes from the former RECOM group which was developed in in 1997 as part of the Red Cross Emergency Communications (RECOM). It was formed by a group of radio amateurs using digital amateur radio and quietly built up an enviable list of achievements. During the disastrous Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 the Red Cross deployed RECOM to nine evacuation centres, where all communications had been lost. As the Red Cross was no longer responsible for the collection of information of those being evacuated the system became available to WICEN Vic and is supported by many WICEN Vic members known as SCU, Special Comms Unit.
