WICEN Vic: WICEN Digital Playground Thursday 18th November

I am involved in the M17 community, and am giving a talk about M17 at
BAREC on Friday evening.  This is both in person at the BAREC clubrooms
in Bendigo, as well as on YouTube live (a recording should be available
after the fact).

My opinion on M17 is it shows promise, some of the features, such as
optional strong encryption and the ability to carry both voice and data
(individually or simultaneously) and interact with APRS and other packet
based systems (you can do M17 over KISS or AX.25 over M17 if needed)
could be attractive.

However, the state of play is that M17 is still very new, with practical
RF implementations only appearing this year, and none yet in a field
deployable package, which means I wouldn't recommend it for WICEN use at
this time.  The encryption, while in the protocol spec, hasn't been
implemented yet either, but I have voiced my interest in this feature. 
One to keep an eye on in the longer term.  M17 is currently undergoing
rapid development on many fronts.  Watch this space.

Another useful feature of M17 is its openness.  While open source hasn't
been seen as a priority in WICEN, it does mean if there's resources
(i.e. developers, constructors, etc) and maybe even a grant, it may be
possible to build (or have built for us) something fit for purpose.
