ACMA ANNOUNCE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE AMATEUR CALLSIGN STRUCTURE

            29 July 2020

The ACMA has today announced major changes to the structure of Australian amateur radio callsigns.

            Key Points:
a.. Foundation Licencees gain access to three-letter calls
b.. Callsigns with three-letter suffix available to all three licence classes
Callsigns with any three-letter suffix, apart from R, are now available to all three licence classes. Repeaters and beacons will continue to use R suffix callsigns.
Advanced licences will continue to use two letter suffix callsigns.

Foundation class amateurs are now able to replace their four-letter suffix with a three-letter suffix, thereby allowing full access to digital modes such as APRS and FT8.

Four-letter suffixes (VKnFxxx) will no longer be issued.

Standard licences are also no longer restricted to specific callsign suffix blocks.

The ACMA announcement can be read here

If you are a Foundation Licencee you can apply for a three-letter callsign. Just check it is available before you apply.

            Syllabus Review Panel Disbanded

The Syllabus Review Panel, established in November 2019, has been unable to reach a consensus on the very minor changes required. This has led the ACMA to the view that the panel will not be able to develop and agree to more substantive changes to the amateur syllabus and, therefore, is not fit-for-purpose to deliver for the broader amateur community.

As a consequence, the panel will be disbanded and the ACMA will amend the Deed with the AMC to remove the requirement for changes to the syllabus to be approved by the panel. Changes to the syllabus will now be managed directly through the ACMA’s usual consultation processes with the amateur community.

            Why Join RASA?

RASA is a representative body for Australian Amateur Radio. We are focused solely on improving our hobby. We conduct evidence based research to lobby the Regulator for better privileges. We provide information to help Amateurs better understand the regulatory environment and we listen to your views. We promote new and emerging technologies and encourage Amateurs to become more active.

We also address issues that impact the majority of amateurs in Australia. Our major project in 2019 was a free online resource to help amateurs deal with QRM. Head over to QRM guru to see more.

In 2020 we'll be focusing on helping newcomers to the hobby - starting with our guide book for newcomers, Welcome to Amateur Radio. And now we have a true e-magazine, QTC.

Help us by joining today and/or making a donation. It's only $8 per year.

This article is an update on what we have achieved so far, what we are working on and what we hope to achieve in the future:
