Hi all,

Interesting graph John - the recent Solar Storm is certainly having an
effect.

I tried to call into the net at about 20:35 - heard some voices, and some
mention of 160, but could not be heard - even with the amp!
That would be the worst I have ever heard on 80 mtr!

I tried 160, but didnt know the frequency or mode - AM/LSB? Frequency - as
band plan says 1840 ti 1875 for ssb/am - I tuned around. Heard some tone
(AM?) on 1860 - tried to make a call there both modes.
Nothing more heard. I was running Mobile with large Turlin antenna, so not
expecting great results. I need that 80 mtr high mast! Wonder how one of my
screens would tune up!

What is the frequency/mode to use?

Thanks

Paul Whitaker.

Conditions were very poor with high noise levels, with static crashes up to
S9+10 or more.

Callins:

Ken VK3ALA, 36, badly affected by static crashes. Much, much weaker than
normal (9+20)

Peter VK3YG, 35, also badly affected by static. Also very much weaker than
normal.

Ken acted as relay to call in any Melbourne stations who may have been able
to copy him better. Nothing heard.

No attempt to pass traffic due to the poor conditions.

Net QSYed to 160m as a trial, conditions were just as bad there or even
worse.

Net closed at approx 2045.

Net control next week (25/7): Craig VK3KG.

Net control the following week (1/8): Ken VK3ALA

The reason for the poor conditions? A combination of storm activity and an
unusually low MUF. The IPS web page, accessed shortly after the net, showed
the following:

This shows a MUF of 2 MHz (red) for the Melbourne region. This is a
near-real-time propagation assessment from ionosonde measurements.

Cheers, John VK3ZRX
