Hi Paul

My choice, given what you want (2m/70cm, about 50W, with cross-band repeat)
would be the Yaesu FT8800R. 50W on 2m and 35W on 70cm.

I have used its close relative, the FT8900R, for many years and I actually
have 2 of them. I know several other WICEN members who have them and are
also very happy with them.

The difference between the 8800 and the 8900 is that the 8900 also covers 6m
(useful) and 10m (not so useful). Both have VHF/VHF, VHF/UHF, and UHF/UHF
dual receive (also very useful).

These are not a new radio, they have been around for many years.

There is not a very big price difference between the 8800 and the 8900, so
personally I would again buy the 8900, because of 6m.

However they are substantially dearer than the Chinese competition. For
example the TYT TH-9800 obviously targets the Yaesu.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, John

Subject: WICEN Vic: Radio suggestions

Greetings all,
As I dont have a good grasp of all new models of radios available, I
thought it quickest to use the membership's knowledge ...
I am looking for a 2m/70cm radio that will operate as a cross band
repeater/translator or whatever is the correct term...
Would need to have about 50 watt TX. capability.
Also, NOT one of the cheapie Chinese etc. boxes. Needs good specs.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Paul Whitaker.
